WHAT IS ? ? ? ?

Paul GriecoSummer of Riesling is the brainchild of Paul Grieco of Hearth and the Terroir family of Wine Bars – “The elitist wine bar for everyone“.

Mr. Grieco started the ball rolling when 7 years ago he decided that from June 21st to September 21st any customer walking in the door, who asked for a white wine, would be met with the response – “What Riesling would you prefer”.  A bold move – a game changer – a bit of a gamble, but one that has paid off in spades, as it has allowed Mr. Grieco to bring Riesling to the masses. Summer of Riesling is now an international event showcasing what just might be everything great in wine – and by that we mean Riesling!!!!!! Click on the pic to learn more about Paul Grieco.

Quote Mr. Grieco – “Everything I do from a beverage perspective is geared around that, and I want to be the de facto Riesling rest stop for everyone in America. But I truly drink these Rieslings — I drink it throughout the year, but especially in the summer. I not only talk the talk, but I walk the walk”

Sacramento is celebrating the Summer of Riesling from August 14th to August 28th. Most of the rest of the World already began celebrating in June, and will continue celebrating sweet and heavy throughout July and August on into the end of Summer. We should be green with envy as we contemplate their head start and the delicious Rieslings they must have drank. Grrrrrrrr!

What we have lost in time, we will make up for in quality (and begin earlier next year!) The last two weeks of August are going to be one big homage to that most delicious of white grapes – Riesling! Sacramento’s finest Chefs, Restaurants and Wine Minds will be showcasing Riesling in all of its glory for your mouth’s monumental enjoyment. Keep in mind – the Summer of Riesling is Delicious – Fun – Educational – Sometimes Toothsomely Sweet (Sometimes Not?) – But it is Decidedly Not Serious – So Come and Enjoy Yourself!

WHY IS ? ? ? ?

BALANCE…OF BONE-CRUSHING ACIDITY AND POTENTIAL SWEETNESS

COMPLEXITY…LIKE A CONVERSATION ABOUT STRING THEORY

DELICACY…LIKE A CHINESE PAPER LANTERN

LONGEVITY…SUFFICE IT TO SAY, MOSES LIVED A BRIEF LIFE COMPARED TO SOME BOTTLES OF THIS WINE

SENSE OF PLACE…A RIESLING FROM THE MOSEL IN GERMANY WILL ONLY EVER TASTE LIKE A RIESLING FROM THE MOSEL IN GERMANY, A RIESLING FROM CLARE VALLEY AUSTRALIA WILL ONLY EVER TASTE LIKE A RIESLING FROM CLARE VALLEY AUSTRALIA. I BET AT THIS POINT YOU CAN GUESS WHAT A RIESLING FROM THE WACHAU IN AUSTRIA TASTES LIKE. HOW ABOUT FROM WASHINGTON STATE?

HOW IS ? ? ? ?

By bringing Sacramento together and handing it a glass of crisp, cold Riesling. Throughout the month you will have a chance to experience Riesling fresh and Riesling aged – Riesling paired with spicy Thai food and clean, lean Sushi – Riesling with bubbles (a lot and a little) – Riesling presented by individual German vineyard – Riesling presented by country, by soil type and by climate – Riesling good, Riesling great . . . and Riesling literally mind-blowing! That’s how it is!!
